What importance does brand play in choosing a franchise?

One of the biggest advantages to buying a franchise is springboarding into an established brand. However, it is often true that the bigger the brand, the more expensive the franchise becomes. So, what if you don’t want to or can’t afford to buy a very established franchise?

The advantage of an established brand is customer trust, confidence and supplier integrity. If the franchise you are considering is not yet well-known, you can look at how the franchise operates and whether there are any strategic partnerships that can offer a similar advantage.

A good example of this is the Waves car wash company, which was set up to offer Tesco customers a hand car wash while they shop in the supermarket. Franchisees work from Tesco car parks and use marketing literature and signage that features the Tesco logo. So, although the Waves brand is still largely unknown, the client relationship with Tesco offers you brand power that you would rarely find elsewhere.

But what I don't understand is why a company with a big name would actually want or need to take on franchisees. Surely they want their own staff to make sure its done their own way

Are there any franchises that work with brands such as E-bay?

To answer your question Michael, companies franchise as it is a great way to develop for "cheap". The franchisee will incur most all the costs (real estate, equipment, ...). The franchisee will be trained by the franchisor.

Linda, yes, there are franchises out there that deal with ebay. They are NOT eBay franchisees, but they are retail/dropship locations where the franchisee help you sell your stuffs on eBay.
